Narmedya Salsabila

Abstract

This study aims to explore the phenomenon of catfishing in the Bumble dating app. Catfishing is a deceptive practice in the online dating world by presenting a false identity for certain interests. The research method used is qualitative descriptive, involving observations conducted on dating app accounts, and interviews with Bumble users who have experienced or are aware of catfishing cases. The results of the study show various motives behind the practice of catfishing relevant to the character of Computer Mediated Communication interactions. These motives include identity isolation, message control, lack of identity verification, anonymous behavior, and delayed interactions. This is often done on the basis of fulfilling financial needs and validation of the sense of insecurity of dating app users. Catfishing tends to cause trauma, damage mental health, reduce self-confidence, and even financial loss. The study provides recommendations to improve the security and protection of users from this practice.
