Abstract

This research aims to analyze the framing of opinions on the issue of “contemporary spiritual slavery” in the Tempo Magazine. This issue is relevant in the context of contemporary Indonesian society, where the phenomenon of excessive worship of certain religious figures, especially those with the title “Habib,” still occurs. This research uses Robert Entman's framing analysis approach to identify how Tempo Magazine defines the problem (define problem), diagnoses causes, makes moral judgments, and offers solutions (treatment recommendations) related to the issue. The selection of Tempo Magazine as a data source was based on its position as an influential mass media in Indonesia known for its investigative and analytical journalism. Overall, the framing done by Tempo shows an effort to criticize practices that are considered detrimental to society and promote the values of rationality, justice, and independence of thought. Through the selection of issues, the highlighting of certain aspects, and the use of strong language, Tempo succeeded in directing public opinion to see this issue from a critical and constructive perspective. This research contributes to understanding how mass media can play a role in shaping public opinion and influencing social discourse on sensitive issues such as religious identity and tradition in Indonesia.
