These External disturbances in the form of lightning strikes pose a serious threat to the reliability of substation equipment, particularly power transformers, which play a vital role in the electricity transmission system. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of lightning arrester placement and determine its effective distance from the power transformer at the 150kV Temanggung Substation to ensure that surge voltages do not exceed the Basic Insulation Level (BIL). The methodology employed includes documentation studies and mathematical calculations using the lattice diagram method (repeated reflection method) to evaluate insulation coordination. The analysis results indicate that a system without arrester protection can experience a surge voltage increase of up to 830.6 kV at 10 μs, exceeding the safety limit. With the installation of an arrester featuring a sparkover voltage of 577 kV, the surge voltage reaching the transformer was successfully suppressed to 730.76 kV at 10.21 μs and continued to decrease thereafter. Theoretically, the maximum allowable distance based on the repeated reflection method is 23.1 meters. The actual field placement at a distance of 4 meters proved to be highly effective as it is well below the maximum threshold and complies with the SPLN-7:1978 standard, providing optimal protection for the transformer against overvoltage damage.
