Abstract

This study aims to determine the role of self-disclosure in building interpersonal communication and trust in long-term friendships among Generation Z students. Self-disclosure is considered an important process in strengthening emotional attachment and forming interpersonal trust, especially in long-term relationships. This study employs a qualitative method with a case study approach and data collection techniques involving in-depth interviews with four informants who have had friendships lasting more than three years. The results indicate that the five aspects of self-disclosure depth and breadth, valence, accuracy, frequency and duration, and intimacy play a significant role in the process of trust formation. Although two of the four informants showed limitations in self-disclosure, all informants acknowledged that comfort and positive responses were the primary factors in fostering openness. This study emphasizes that self-disclosure is not only influenced by the duration of the relationship but also by the quality of communication within it.
