Abstract

This study aims to analyze the construction of national identity in the lyrics of Jadilah Legenda by Superman Is Dead through the relationship between the signifier and the signified from the perspective of Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic theory. This research employed a qualitative approach using Saussurean semiotic analysis. The data were collected through a documentation study of the song lyrics and analyzed through several stages, including the identification of signifiers, the interpretation of signifieds, the analysis of the relationship between signifiers and signifieds, and the formulation of conclusions. The findings reveal that the signifiers embedded in the lyrics, including geographical elements, cultural diversity, collective pronouns, the diction "legenda" (legend), and imperative expressions, function as a system of signs that constructs the meaning of national identity. The resulting signifieds represent Indonesia as a homeland endowed with abundant natural resources, a nation that embraces cultural diversity, preserves a collective memory of historical struggles, and positions nationalism as the moral responsibility of every citizen. Furthermore, the relationship between the signifiers and the signifieds constructs a national identity that portrays Indonesia as a community united by its geographical landscape, cultural heritage, historical legacy, and shared aspirations.
